Biological Filtration

Biological filtration done right!

Robin’s Nest is a leader in Biological Filtration in New England. Their 25 years of experience, hard work, and intuitive design and engineering will leave you with a smile on your face and enjoying every moment next to, in, and around your new water garden, swim pond or natural waterfall.

Pond Biological Filtration (Bio-Filtration) uses a pump, plants filter area and usually a waterfall return to filter and aerate existing or new earthen or lined ponds. Some refer to it as a sort of bog filter.

Using an energy-efficient pump, proper plumbing, and native plant and stone material, a client can expect something very functional and beautiful at the same time. We like to think of it as a reward to the client for doing the right thing for his property, water, and the environment.

Bio filter construction

Constructed bio-filters, often referred to as bog filters are very similar to leach fields for septic systems, with a few exceptions:

Bio-filters are open on top and planted heavily with filtering plants.
Bio-filters pump water from the pond, through the filter, and returning back to the pond via a man-made waterfall and/or brook.
Beneficial bacteria are introduced to substantially reduce organic matter and break it down.
Cleaning the filter is done by thinning the plants and back-washing it annually.
